In 1978, a piece of excrement named william luther pierce published a novel called the "Turner Diaries", which depicts a movement by white nationalists to overthrow the federal government through a violent revolution that includes a race war. Since its publishing, extremists from anti-government militia types to white nationalists and supremacists have embraced the book's narrative. Even more troubling, so-called mainstream politicians have lifted some of the book's themes and incorporated them into their own political messaging. In his confession to authorities after sitting through a prayer meeting at an African-American church and slaughtering nine of the people who welcomed him in, racist dylann roof indicated his desire to start a race war. Recently, three Virginia white supremacists were taken into custody over their alleged complicity in trying to start a race war by doing what roof did - shooting up African American and Jewish places of worship. The infiltration of white supremacists into America's armed forces in order to get the training that helps prepare them for a race war is a well-documented fact.
republibaggerservatives from candidates for president to wing-nut media bloviators to posters in racism-mongering, troglodyte, scumbucket web sites have all accused President Obama of trying to or wanting to start a race war for having the temerity to acknowledge that perhaps there are some police officers engaging in a level of misconduct that puts the lives of law abiding black Americans in jeopardy. From invective against so-called "jack-booted government thugs" to proposals for "second amendment remedies" to support for shooting federal personnel trying to enforce the law in a case regarding a law-breaking racist rancher, republican politicians have embraced some aspect of the apocalyptic themes of the Turner Diaries in their rhetoric.
Fortunately, the vast majority of the American people have a big enough compliment of properly-firing brain synapses and a requisite level of basic human decency to reject the race war rhetoric that comes from the rabid right. More importantly, those who have been the specific targets of violence have, for the most part, resisted the urge to respond to that violence with violence of their own. The vast majority of black folks in general and all those most closely affected by the Charleston massacre responded to dylann roof's sick, twisted effort to start a race war with a full-throated affirmation of our shared humanity. Black Lives Matter and other protests against racism and extrajudicial violence have been, for the most part, non-violent. Opinions that involve the castigation of white people in general for the actions and the rhetoric of white supremacists and extremists are generally rejected.
Unfortunately, one cannot say the same about republibaggerservative reactions to violent Islamic extremism. As demonstrated by the rejection of Syrian refugees by 31 (so far) mostly republican governors, the calls for the closing of mosques on the part of republican presidential candidates and the violence and threats thereof that have been aimed both at Muslims and Christians who don't happen to be white, many Americans are reacting to the Paris terrorist attacks in the manner that white nationalists have long hoped we would react to the violent acts of racial terrorists. In short, American conservatives are - quite stupidly - taking the bait of violent Islamic extremism and are actually advancing their interests in jihad. What better way to recruit more adherents to radical extremism than to have Americans reject, harass and persecute Muslims broadly?
Republibaggerservatives are doing for Islamic extremists exactly what white supremacists want people of color to do - meet their violence with an escalation of hatred and violence in return. White nationalists hold out hope that their violent acts and rhetoric can catalyze a race war. Islamic extremists hold out hope that their violent acts and rhetoric can catalyze a holy war. Unlike those of us who regard racist extremists with utmost contempt, conservatives - in all of their ignorance and reactionary bluster - have taken the bait offered up by ISIL and other violent factions of Islamic extremism. In so doing, they increase the possibility that disaffected young people - from American citizens to immigrants - find the siren song of jihad more compelling.
