An interesting OpEd that poses a compelling question while ignoring - in all self-delusion - the real and obvious impact of the half century of republican appeals to white racial resentment that began in earnest after the signing of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts. Since then, republicans have sought office by telling weak-minded people who to resent, who to fear, who to hate and who to begrudge. While the interests of black Americans for full citizenship rights and economic opportunity was the original target for such vituperation, almost anyone not white, Christian and hetero will do today. Donald Trump recognizes the republican "base" and has merely played to their resentments of lost racial, ethnic and religious hegemony while also claiming to have a solution to their feelings of economic insecurity.
